  Övergran Church, Uppland

Övergran is a parish in the municipality of Håbo. This church was originally built in a Romanesque style during the 12th century. The nave remains from this period. The tower at the west end was built in the 13th century and during the same century the nave was extended to the west and a sacristy was built.

During the 18th century parts of the church was rebuilt and the old al fresco paintings were lime washed according to the Lutheran tradition.

In 1905 the church was restored and got its present form.

The earlier mentioned late medieval wall paintings are regarded as the first independent work by the well-known Albert Pictor. At a restoration in 1972 the paintings were uncovered and can now be seen in all their beauty.

On the photo above a rune stone can be seen. It is one of several that surround the church.

Övergran belongs to the Diocese of Uppsala, the County of Uppsala and the Province of Uppland. Photo: Lars Henriksson, 15th of July, 2008.
