Mora Church in Dalarna

  Mora Church

This church was during the middle age consecrated to the archangel Saint Mikael. A sculpture of S:t Mikael and the dragon is seen in the foreground of this photo.

A church of grey stone was built on the same place as the recent church in the 13th century, consisting of a nave and probably also a more narrow choir and vestry. Parts of the old walls are integrated in the new church.

1671 was the church partly destroyed by fire. The fire took the tower spire and all roofs, but the vaults stood, which reduced the interior damages. The reconstruction work started immediately under powerful leadership and with support of the authorities. A new roof was ready in October the same year. The construction work continued gradually. In 1673 was a new tower spire raised.

The bell tower east of the church was built in 1672. It was provided with a cupper roof in the 1830's.

Mora belongs to the parish and the municipality with the same name, to the Diocese of Västerås, the County of Kopparbergs Län and the Province of Dalarna. Photo: John Henriksson, 9th of November, 2008.
